Went to (of all things) an Irish pub last night in the one horse town Patagonian town of Rio Gallegos. The DJ played all British rock songs, the live band played south american salsa and toasted us as Antarctic travellers. Guinness in bottles, St Patrick night symbols everywhere. Heavy rock locals in odd leather outfits and girls with tatoo’s and short skirts – all a bit odd…

Being a Brit sometimes has its advantages – but all a bit surreal after Antarctica. 2 hours sleep in a gas smelling wooden hut room and on the Hercules for a 4 and half hour flight to Buenos Aires.

small track vehicle across the snow to the waiting military hercules aircraft sat waiting on the air strip. A welcome sight for all. We need to be quick as the weather is closing in and night is coming. In the distance perched high on a hill sits a Russian wooden church building (of a sort) – its looks completely out of place here in Antarctica. Nearby the Chinese base receives supplies. Chinese, Russian, Chilean and Argentine bases and people – what a mix!

A 3 hour journey – uncomfortable things these Hercules planes. No toilet and sat in parachute webbing seats crammed in…but must not be negative!
